NY Mets pitching prospect Matt Harvey impresses again in outing Wednesday

PORT ST. LUCIE - A short time after Chipper Jones grounded out against Matt Harvey last Friday, Josh Thole arrived at third base. The future Hall of Famer, shaking his head, had a question for the Mets catcher.

“Where did you get this guy?”nike outlet albertville mn
Jones said. “He’s throwing bowling balls up there.”

The legion of Harvey believers is growing, and the Mets pitching prospect built his legend by retiring Jones and Jason Heyward on Friday, among other Braves.

His third appearance of the spring took place on a much smaller stage, but Harvey was no less impressive. Pitching against Mets minor leaguers at the team’s spring training complex, Harvey breezed through five scoreless innings Wednesday.

With team brass including Jeff Wilpon, John Ricco and J.P. Ricciardi watching along with fellow phenom Zack Wheeler, who sat on a picnic table behind the backstop, Harvey displayed a fastball that sat around 94 mph, while often touching 96 mph, and a whiff-inducing changeup.

“I was really happy with my offspeed pitch,” said Harvey, the Mets’ first-round pick (seventh overall) in 2010 out of the University of North Carolina. “I was getting everything over for a strike. Still not quite therecheap womens nike running shoes

The 22-year-old also said that he has noticed improvements since last season, his first full year in professional baseball. Splitting time between Single-A and Double-A, Harvey was 13-5 with a 3.32 ERA.

This spring, he said, “I feel like my mechanics are a lot more repeatable, especially with my off-speed stuff. I’m staying in-line better and getting out in front. I’m able to throw any pitch on any count right now. Last year, that might not have been the case, but this year, the last couple of outings I have been able to do that.”

LANGILL SUSPENDED

The Mets announced that bullpen catcher Eric Langill, who was arrested and charged with DUI in Port St. Lucie on Sunday night after a one-car accident, will be suspended for seven days without pay.

METS LOSE

A Mets squad diminished by injuries and the right of veterans to skip lengthy bus rides lost to Detroit, 8-7, in 10 innings, in Lakeland, Fla. Wednesday. Dillon Gee started and allowed two runs in four innings, the damage coming on a two-run home run by Prince Fielder.

No Mets were hurt in the making of that ballgame.
